Sweetwater’s Donut Mill

On Wednesday, October 11, I decided to take a small road trip on one of my days off. What better place to road trip than to a donut shop?! I told myself, “I need to go find donuts.” Since there are no great shops around me, I had to drive an hour over to Battle Creek where I was reunited with my summer love: Sweetwater’s Donut Mill. I came across these donuts over the summer during an impromptu trip to Lake Michigan (Jad had never seen the lake and lived here his entire like, like, bro, what are you even doing with your life????). Also, I don’t mind driving for food as long as it’s delicious. None of that mediocre stuff.

I knew that I was in for great donuts and for cheap. Nothing better than delicious, cheap food! If there’s one thing everyone can agree on, it’s finding great-tasting food for even better prices. If you disagree with me, well, then….I really don’t even know what to say to you. Honestly, just…just leave.

OK SO. I drove to Battle Creek and pulled into the parking lot. Instantly I started panting and heaving with excitement. I walked into Sweetwater’s and nearly fainted from the smell of the doughnuts. I thought to myself, “This is what Heaven must smell like.” Even the sight of them gave me heart palpitations! I told myself I wouldn’t buy too many since I had so many donuts over the weekend and honestly, I did need a break, as crazy as that might sound to some of you. I bought 3 lovelies: a Mint Chocolate Chip, a Pumpkin Cheesecake, and a Snickers.

Side note: Sweetwater’s is open 24 HOURS A FRIGGIN DAY LIKE ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! Can we PLEASE just take a minute to reflect on how AMAZING that is? Ok. Moment of reflection over. Back to regular you programming.

#1. the Mint Chocolate Chip: She was delicious. I know some people aren’t a mint chip fan, but I am, so that makes your opinion here irrelevant. *cue “Sorry Not Sorry” by Demi Lovato* The mint frosting was a wonderful consistency. It was creamy, like a minty chocolatey velvet blanket keeping the donut safe and warm. Sometimes the mint in desserts can overpower everything else, but this was not the case here. It’s never a good thing when you feel as though you’re eating mint toothpaste. The donut itself was dense and soft and the chocolate was on the darker side (I’m not talking DARK chocolate, but it was darker than milk chocolate which made it fabulous).

#2. the Pumpkin Cheesecake: D-E-L-I-C-I-O-U-S! Usually when I taste pumpkin donuts they are without much taste let alone pumpkin, dry, or they have an overpowering cinnamon aspect to them. This donut was pure pumpkin heaven. The frosting was perfect and creamy, similar to that of cheesecake. Sprinkled on top of that was some sort of cinnamon and (brown?) sugar mix that delightfully complemented the frosting and the pumpkin. It wasn’t dry and held together beautifully. It felt like the donut was practically melting in my mouth….*cue drool* There was a slight cinnamon taste inside the dough, but it actually enhanced the pumpkin flavor instead of detracting from it.

#3. the Snickers: out of all three donuts, this one was my least favorite. It wasn’t bad, but it just wasn’t my favorite. Now don’t get me wrong here–I liked this donut, but in comparison to the first two, I felt like it didn’t hold it’s weight like it should have. For starters, too many peanuts. Waaaaay too many. It was like I was eating a regular chocolate-peanut covered donut; I could have just gone to my local Quality Dairy for that (it’s a mid-Michigan thing). I liked the chocolate donut itself however because it followed suit with the others: not dry or crumbly, good flavor, density was nice. There was some caramel holding the peanuts in place, but it could have used more in my opinion. I am a caramel lover so if you think it’s just the right amount, you should probably add a little more (in my professional opinion 😉 ). Would I choose this one again? Mmm probably not. Would I save this donut from a burning building? I mean, it’s a donut. OF COURSE I WOULD SAVE IT FROM A FIREY DEATH ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!

All in all, Sweetwater’s Donut Mill is a great place to go and you can always count on them to produce some of the most delicious donuts in lower west Michigan. For anyone that finds themselves coming across the good ole’ mitten, be sure to stop into Sweetwater’s because you won’t be disappointed!
